Pequot Lakes Is Improving South Trailside Park: What's Next for the Town's Front Yard
Pequot Lakes is upgrading South Trailside Park, including a sewer connection for the chamber building and a relocated Bean Hole Days bean pit. Here is what is coming.

Pequot Lakes is planning a round of improvements to the south end of Trailside Park, the roughly nine-and-a-half-acre park at the heart of downtown, and the work says more about the town than the scope suggests. In August 2025 the city council approved applying for a Sourcewell matching grant of up to $40,000 for South Trailside improvements, and the focus has since sharpened to two items: connecting the city-owned chamber building to the sewer system and relocating the Bean Hole Days bean pit so the space works better for festivals. It is not glamorous work, but it is the kind of behind-the-scenes investment that keeps a town's favorite gathering place practical for decades.
What Trailside Park Already Offers
The park earns the title of the town's front yard. The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs directly through it, which means cyclists and walkers pass the playground, the splash pad, and the picnic shelters on their way through town. A veteran's memorial and a memorial garden sit near the bandshell that hosts summer events, and the open lawn turns into the community's festival grounds, most famously during Bean Hole Days, when the buried-bean cookoff draws the whole town, and the Fourth of July celebrations. Few Lakes Area towns have a park that does this much work for the community. What the Improvements Include
Two projects anchor the plan. The chamber building will be connected to the city sewer system, timed with the Main and Front street sewer work so the park is not torn up multiple times. That frees the building and the surrounding ground for easier event use. The Bean Hole Days bean pit will be relocated, which sounds modest but matters: the pit is a working piece of the town's biggest summer tradition, and moving it with grading and landscaping between the chamber building and Main Street gives the south end of the park a more usable festival layout. The city is deliberately coordinating the projects so the park gets rebuilt once, not repeatedly. Why It Matters to Buyers
A town that maintains its park the way Pequot Lakes maintains this one is signaling something important: residents gather here, and the city plans for that to continue. Trailside Park sits right where the Giant Bobber and the Paul Bunyan State Trail meet Main Street, minutes from the schools and the grocery store, and our Pequot Lakes community guide lays out the broader picture. For families, the combination of a real downtown, a trail through town, and a park built for festivals is exactly the day-to-day life most buyers are hoping to find, and the park also hosts the community's big winter gathering, Santa's Bobbin' Into Town. In winter or summer, this park is where the town shows up.The Honest Read
Park improvements are not the kind of news that makes a splash, and the work itself is mostly invisible by the time it is done. But the pattern matters: the town is investing in the spaces where its residents actually gather, from the schools and downtown streets to the park that hosts its best traditions. That kind of steady civic maintenance is one of the quieter reasons Pequot Lakes keeps working as a place to live.Thinking about Pequot Lakes for your family?
