Pequot Lakes is the town everyone drives through on the way to somewhere else, and then some of them never leave. Its landmark is a fishing bobber the size of a small building, its backyard is Minnesota's longest paved state trail, and its position between the lakes area and points north makes it a hub for riders, anglers, and families looking for a smaller-town feel. Here is a closer look at Pequot, and why the town deserves more than a drive-through.

The world's largest fishing bobber

The town's water tower downtown was painted in the late eighties to look like a giant red-and-white fishing bobber, and it still presides over the square today. The park at its base, Bobber Park, is where you will find Paul Bunyan's oversized chair and the blue ox that goes with it, all within a short walk of a paved trailhead and a cup of coffee. It is playful in the best way, a town that named its own myth and wears it well.

The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs right through town

Pequot sits directly on the Paul Bunyan State Trail, Minnesota's longest continuously paved rail trail. The trail runs from the Brainerd Lakes side, near Brainerd and Baxter north through Nisswa and Pequot, all the way up toward the Lake Bemidji area, roughly 120 miles of flat, groomed riding. From Bobber Park you can ride south toward the Brainerd-Baxter side and the lakes area trail towns, or north toward Pine River and into the woods country, with a connection to another long state trail near the town of Walker.

For buyers, the trail is not a listing amenity; it is part of the town's daily life. In summer it carries bikes and walkers, in autumn it runs through the fall color, and in winter it turns into a route for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. If active, low-key outdoor living is a core reason for the move, few towns in the area give you more trail per front porch.

A town with its feet in the lakes

The bobber and the trail sit on top of a town that covers the practical bases: resort lakes close by, a quiet downtown, and a school system small enough that people know each other. Pequot sits in the middle of the Brainerd Lakes Area, with the Whitefish region water to one side and the woods of Cass County to the other, which is why it fills the niche for buyers who want a calmer pace than the busiest waterfront towns.

Why Pequot deserves a longer look

  • **The trail is the giveaway.** The longest state trail in Minnesota passes right through town, and it pays off for people who live and play on two legs or two wheels.
  • **A genuine four-season town.** Bobber summers, hot autumn colors, and snow routes in winter; Pequot does all of them without straining.
  • **Positioning.** Everything in the Lakes Area is reachable from here by road, and the trail links you north and south.
  • The honest read

Pequot Lakes is easy to overlook and easy to love. It is a town built around a fishing bobber and a rail trail, which tells you almost everything about the priorities here: a little fun, a little movement, and the lakes just beyond the garden gate. That is an accurate picture of the everyday life you would be moving into.
