The Cuyuna Trails Keep Growing: 11.4 New Miles Approved

The DNR approved the Cuyuna Connection and Cuyuna Hills Trails project, about 11.4 new miles, and the 10th Cuyuna Crusher drew over 500 riders. Here is what that growth means.

Crosby's mountain bike network is expanding again. The Minnesota DNR approved the Cuyuna Connection and Cuyuna Hills Trails project, adding roughly 11.4 miles of new trail to the recreation area, and the 10th annual Cuyuna Crusher drew more than 500 riders with over 100 volunteers. For a region that rebuilt its economy on the iron ore pits, the new miles are the next chapter of a second act that keeps getting bigger.

What the New Trail Approval Adds

The Cuyuna Connection and Cuyuna Hills Trails project clears the way for about 11.4 miles of new singletrack within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, the kind of addition that extends the network rather than just connecting what exists. The recreation area already offers roughly 70 miles of Red Gold singletrack and carries silver-level IMBA Ride Center designation, a rating that puts it in select national company. New approved miles mean new loops, new climbs, and new reasons to return.

How the Trails Got Here

This is a reclaimed mine landscape. A century after the iron mines shut down, the same hills, rail grades, and flooded pits became one of the best trail networks in the Upper Midwest, and the crew behind it is still building. The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew runs volunteer trail nights on Thursdays from May through August, which is how a lot of the singletrack gets born: local hands, local dirt, long seasons. Our guide to Crosby and the Cuyuna trails covers how the whole network works.

The Crusher Keeps Getting Bigger

The Cuyuna Crusher is the network's signature event, and its 10th running on August 24, 2025 at Miner's Mountain Rally Center in Ironton drew more than 500 riders and over 100 volunteers. The 2026 Crusher is set for August 23. An event that reliably pulls that many riders confirms what the trail builders already know: the Cuyuna country has graduated from hidden gem to destination, and the growth is still on.

What More Trails Mean for the Housing Market

Trail miles matter to home values in Crosby in a way they do not in most towns. Buyers who come for the mountain biking, and the fat biking and Nordic skiing that keep the trails busy in winter, are choosing the area for year-round recreation, and each new approved mile deepens that draw. It also broadens the market: a bigger network attracts the weekend destination crowd, which supports the restaurants and shops on Crosby's Main Street and lifts the whole community's livability.

The Bottom Line

Eleven point four miles of new approved trail may not sound dramatic on paper. In practice it is the difference between a network you visit and a network you build a life around. Crosby's trail story keeps adding pages, and each one makes the town a stronger answer for buyers who want lake proximity and serious outdoor recreation in the same address.
